How Direct Modeling and Meshing Speeds Up FEA

One fundamental aspect of Finite Element Analysis is constructing a finite element (FE) mesh, but is often the most time consuming step in the process sometimes spanning hours or days.

Consider the example below (Table 1 and Video 1). The beginning geometry has a number of free edges and gaps that must be closed. With a pre post processor that does not have Direct Modeling, the amount of time needed to perform the operations is 3.5 minutes and requires 100+ clicks. With Direct Modeling, as shown in the video below, the same operations required 21 seconds and 10 clicks. I should also note that this technology is pushed one level higher with the additional ability to modify geometry that is already meshed, a unique capability in MSC Apex known to expedite the meshing process up to 10x.

Below is a more elaborate example of an aircraft part. With a pre processor that does not have Direct Modeling and Meshing, the time to produce the mesh would have taken 38 hours. With Direct Modeling and Meshing, the process was reduced to 5 hours. That is a 7x speed up with little experience necessary. Once you achieve proficiency, you can easily perform the same example 10x faster.
